The people of Hiroshima suffered greatly. According to A-Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the Project Gutenberg Consortia Center, there were many casualties caused by the atomic bomb. Those that survived the direct attack form the bomb suffered from disease and cancer. No one within the area was safe from the radiation.

Disease X is a very mysterious illness many survivors experienced. The illness is a result of radiation within the human system. The number of casualties because of this disease is large. It is still unclear whether any have survived after being diagnosed with Disease X. The symptoms of Disease X include vomiting, diarrhea, swollen mouth and throat, bleeding from the mouth, and bluish colored spots on the skin. Just as cancer has yet to have a cure Disease X has not found its own cure. This disease is still being studied and observed as one of the mysterious illnesses in the world.

The atomic bomb has also caused higher risks for cancer along with Disease X. The most common cases are lung cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer, and Leukemia. Due to the radiation exposure the risk for cancer has increased for the victims greatly. The radiation finds its way into the human system rearranges the molecular structure of what it comes incontact with. The new molecular code usually changes into a poison that the human body has no immunity against. Becuase of the unpredictable molecular rearranging there is no definite cure for cancer. The fear of high risk wasn’t the only worry the survivors had. People feared that their own high risk for cancer was hereditary and could be passed on to their children. The National Cancer Institute has found that cancer can be common among families due to an abnormal gene or similar risk factors. But many scientists such as Dr. Nori Nakamura, Radiation Effects Research Foundation’s chief scientist, has yet to find evidence of any indication of genetic effects. Radiation from the atomic bomb has proven to be of more danger to those who have been exposed than offspring of survivors. But there are cases of offspring having been effected by radiation.

Unborn children that were still in development stages during the atomic bomb attack were not safe from the effects. Pregnant woman that were exposed to radiation could not protect their unborn children. Radiation was able to enter their system and cause birth problems. The results for the effected children were usually birth defects, deformities, diseases, weak immune system and organs, damages to the brain, and development difficulties throughout their lifetime. The atomic bomb has caused even the unborn suffering.
